Crumbling French villas
Posted Sunday, 21 May 2006
Actually Vientiane is full of extremely well preserved grand French villas from a time when it is one of the three colonial Indochinese capital cities along with Phenom Penh in Cambodia and Hanoi in Vietnam. These days, however, it's foreign embassies, NGO's and big banks that look after the buildings. This villa housed none of the above and so is left to rot by the government who have little love (or money) to upkeep colonial buildings. There is grass growing out of the roof.
