little bit of (sleezy) Britian in SE Asia
Posted Thursday, 21 September 2006
On to Malaysia I had a 24 hour journey strategically missing southern Thailand due to some problems they are having there. met a Durham lad who hadn't slept in days due to some hard core partying. we played cards until 2 am to keep him awake he was literally nearly weeping. the overnight train was the usual 'fantastic i have a bed'...two seconds later they wake you up for tea and coffee... but it is only dawn....are you crazy? I met some great people who fed me exotic fruits and gabbled in Spanish. my new compardres have been leading me astray for the last few days in George town (Malaysia). there was Tio Juan ( uncle John) who looks like Kojak is my dad's age and has been travelling the world for 3 years on his pension. there is Diane who is originally form the UK but has lived in Spain for 35 years and travels Asia every year buying stuff to sell in Spain in the markets. she spends most of her time in Indonesia and has set up a small NGO helping orphaned kids from the Tsunami. Fran is a lovely nurse from the same island as Diane and is keen to learn English and teaches me Spanish. we must look like a funny crew. Diane and Fran are off to day to Indonesia to do their aid work and excursions in the jungle after, they want me to join them. I'm undecided as yet as the rescheduling is a hassle and I already have trips booked here...but it could be an opportunity of a life time...arrrr....watch this space!!

We are staying in what Diane described as a crumbling colonial old brothel on love lane...however as there have been troubles in the southern Thai province the hookers there have migrated to George town and seemingly this guest house. the brothel is very much come alive again. I can't quite describe it. i feel like i am in a world war one film. there is high ceilings, peeling paint, old gas fitting and i have a cracked sink with original tap. we sit out the front court yard and watch the lady boys wander past with waists as big as my calf muscle. Last night I was woken by a hooker and punter arguing over money and then this morning by a pimp and a hooker arguing over money...i hope this isn't the same wo/man as she has had a rough night!! the owner is really quite gross. he has a massive round belly, with man boobs, a twitch that means he licks the side of his mouth so he has a permanent sore. and does that rank phelming from the back of the throat thing ALL THE TIME...He is harmless enough and quite funny.. I gave him an arm wrestle... i let him win...

George town is a colonial town with European and Chinese influences. there is a real multicultural mix which is so refreshing. there is a Little India and China town. loads of great street food. we wandered the streets and there were different temples of so many different religions and mosques all doing prayers. they all seem to get along... and guess what they all watch football!! some matches are 3am here..the restaurant owner we were in last night explained that recently morning market has been a little later and his breakfast business has gone down hill.

Last night I dragged the girls (uncle Juan left us for Bali) to a colonial type bar that played live Jazz ( piano, sax and double bass) i had a glass of RED WINE ( i haven't had for months) for the same price as my accommodation! it was a little piece of heaven and opulence I'm not akin to.
