Ben Hai river - border of Vietnam for 20 years
Posted Tuesday, 06 June 2006
Here is where French and then independent (American-backed) South Vietnam stopped and Ho Chi Minh's North Vietnam began. It took until the mid '70s and the Communist's victory before Vietnam was united. The rather scary looking monument is in South Vietnam and was erected after the war. It is of a South Vietnamese woman looking into the North and longing for her pro-Ho husband to come home when he is victorious. The vicious dagger looking things are actually plam leaves.

CarlYeah, that's what they tell you right before hoisting you up and dropping your pale, Western belly right onto the skewery top.

Previously: Me respectfully reading the Lonley Planet on Ho Chi Minh's old living room table

Next: The river now - peaceful and serene.
