At the airport
Posted Saturday, 13 August 2005
Well itwasn't looking too sparkling yestreday morning when BA canclled my flight but for some strange reason, everyoe's favourite opportunist had laid on a bunch of replacement flights almost immediately. Thank you, Virgin! I also sampled the new Virgin service from B'ham International, which was both fast and extremely pleasant. Here at the airport, tapping into an Internet, erm, thingy.. like a pay phone but with a screen and a very stiff keyboard that I have to henpeck, I was tempted to complete the experience with a quick visit to the Virgin Megastore but after noting the breathtaking prices, considered that Bransn has had enough of my cash already recently.

So here I am, 70 minutes from takeoff, armed only with Bukowski's pastiche Pulp and a whole heap of stuff that should've gone in the hold, only I don't trust them to look after it. I rather hope I get at least a little sleep as I will arrive at 9pm thinking it's 2am. Not much confidence inspired by my Imperial-at-all-costs friend meeting me. "2100 means 10pm, right?"

No dear. But if the full extent of my miscommunication is an hour of somebody else's time, I'm doing okay. At very least I expect to get some free chips - see below. I am particularly interested to see whether requesting, "fries" will indeed result in being ejected from the shop, or whether I'll have to go for a more British, "drunken abuse" strategy.

Either way, I'll let you know when I'm there.

DL2100 means 11pm, at least according to Virgin and JFK airport!
CarlYou crazy Luddite Americans! It's a wonder you didn't invent a more obtuse monetary system than the old £sd system just to be different.
