Rarotonga
Posted Sunday, 22 July 2007
When we left New Zealand it was midwinter (we'd just celebrated the solstice) and when we landed in Rarotonga it was also winter. However, Rarotonga does winter in style and we arrived in a blaze of sunshine, 26 degree heat, and were welcomed by a man playing a ukelele with flowers in his hair. This is my kind of winter!

This island is the largest of the Cook Islands and has around 10,000 people living on it. I'm not sure where they all are though, because Rarotonga is absolutely tiny (31km circumference) and everything but a narrow band of development right on the coast is impenetrable jungle. There are two buses: one goes anti-clockwise and the other clockwise. It's tough to get lost!

We had three weeks here and had properly tropical weather (including some incredible storms) but it was mainly pretty hot and we got enough sun to put a tan back on our pasty winter faces. The snorkeling was fab; we did lots of swimming with the fishies! The island is surrounded by a coral reef and the lagoon by us was perfect - we waded across to a little island in it almost every day. The water was completely clear and warm. Amazing.

Thinking about flying in to LA where two and a half times more people live than New Zealand is pretty nerve-wracking...
