Rotorua
Posted Tuesday, 19 June 2007
Rotorua is essentially two things:
1. A big tourist destination for crazy young thrill-seekers like ourselves; and
2. A thermal town sitting on a really thin bit of the earth’s crust.
Consequently you can hurl your body out of planes, off cliffs, down hills in giant water-filled balls etc etc, and you can do it all while retching like fury because everywhere stinks of rotten egg. It’s a bit disconcerting to see sulphurous steam venting from beneath every rock and tuft of grass. When the wind’s against you, you can find yourself enveloped in a cloud of steam that’s unexpectedly pumping out of the pavement next to the pub you just had a pleasant drink in. Doesn’t feel quite right, somehow.
