Lijang town
Posted Monday, 19 February 2007
This was our favourite place in China, by far. The town is a world heritage site and so has retained loads of charm despite the (all Chinese except us) tourists. It was incredible; neither of us thought places like this still existed outside of film sets. Unfortunately it took a life-threatening three hour drive to get there. Overtaking on a hill on a corner on a dusty mountain track was fun. It was also nice when a car on the other side of the road overtook and came bombing head-on towards us until our driver swerved and almost knocked some poor geezer off his wheelchair.

Lijang is really close to Tibet, and is over 2000 metres above sea level. We visited Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world (deeper than the grand canyon). The legend is that the gorge is so narrow a tiger once lept across it to excape being hunted. Look at the pics coming up though; it must've been a pretty good jump...

We also spent the day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. We went up on a chairlift to this amazing clearing, with the peak of Jade Dragon looming up behind it. It was beautiful and incredibly peaceful until the Chinese kareoke started up. We were also treated to a protracted bout of kareoke on the way back down the mountain - the Chinese prefer noise.
