Singapore, baby!
Posted Wednesday, 31 January 2007
We arrived in Singapore at 7am local time, 11pm UK time, feeling a bit strung out after the 12 hour flight, but really excited! This is an amazing city: it's unrealisitcally clean (chewing gum is against the law) and a bit harsh on the Singaporeans (hangings take place on Fridays, we're told); but everyone is really friendly and we totally love it.

It's verging on the Brave New World here - everything seems brand new, and where it looks old it's probably not. They like to tear old stuff down and replace it with replicas that have the added bonus of 21st-century facilities. They also keep reclaiming land from the sea so the coastline is constantly creeping outwards (Beach Road is now a few kilometres inland). Cars over 10 years old are scrapped and you can't buy a house unless you're married, but there are loads of different cultures here and everyone we've spoken to seems perfectly happy, and often proud of being Singaporean. (Then again, dissent is against the law too.)

Wish we had more time here really but we're off to China tomorrow. Just time for one more curry...
